Gluten Sensitivity

It may be time we learn more about an ingredient in bread that more and more people are trying to avoid.

A condition called celiac disease has gotten a lot of attention in recent years. It affects about 1 percent of the population. When people with this condition eat gluten which is found in wheat and some other grains it causes damage in their intestines. If you think gluten Is causing you symptoms, check with your doctor to see if you have celiac disease.

But a growing number of people think they’re sensitive to gluten even when they don’t have celiac disease. People with this problem say they have symptoms such as bloating, diarrhea, headache, and sores in their mouth that get better after they cut gluten out of their diet. Many of the symptoms are similar to those of celiac disease.

According to the doctors, this problem may indeed exist and they are calling for additional research. However, they say, gluten shouldn’t be considered harmful for the public in general.

If you think gluten Is causing you symptoms, check with your doctor to see if you have celiac disease, which can lead to serious complications if it’s not treated.
