Strengthen Family Bonding with Fun Indoor Activities for Kids

Looking for fun and fabulous indoor activities to keep the kids busy? Spending time at home with energetic kids may have its challenges. However, with a little imagination, it’s a remarkable time for family bonding.

The world is different now. Even as stay-at-home mandates end, your kids may be inside more often. This is a great opportunity for family time, and it’s a chance for you to really look at your kids. Be fully present – watch them and listen to them.

Your enthusiasm empowers your kid’s excitement about an activity. Rather than thinking of ways to keep your children from “boredom”, reframe these activities as “creative outlets” for growth and brain development. Play is an important part of how your child learns. By being an active, not passive participant, we learn more.

Kids need time away from games, phones and gadgets. But they may not excel, or be interested, in every activity. Encourage them to explore different facets of their talents and personalities. Explore their creative side with educational indoor activities to help them learn.

Create fun opportunities for family bonding at home by engaging the entire family with the following activities. Your kids will get an additional life lesson; learning how to be a team player.

Romantic Date-Night With The Kids

Make dinner an event by having a romantic date night with your kids. Date nights are unique, and out of the ordinary. Explain what makes a date night memorable to you, along with the elements of a romantic evening. This family event can be elegant or casual but aim for a beautiful atmosphere, great background music, candles, flowers, delicious food, and fun entertainment afterward. Above all, let them know it’s all about spending quality time with a loved one and taking the time to plan ahead to make it special.

Elegant Sit-down Dinner

An elegant dinner needs to be beautiful, not stuffy. Start by creating a menu that includes all the family favorites. Let each child select a course to plan and help prepare, including prepping the ingredients. If everyone chooses desert, they’ll need to take turns on future date nights.

Print a physical menu and place cards for the table. Make it into a fun project. The kids can help with the design. Create a family logo or use a picture of your pet. Everyone will feel special having their own seating at a nicely set table.

Stimulate all the senses. Create a colorful centerpiece with fresh flowers or fruit.  And, when it’s time for dinner, light scented candles for an atmosphere of romance.

Go Casual With An Indoor Family Picnic

Maybe cooking just isn’t your jam. Or, if you’re working remotely from home, the thought of prep and clean up may be overwhelming. You can still create a romantic date night with take-out, pizza or putting together a quick, easy dinner.

Lay out a blanket in front of the TV and pick out a great family movie. Open your favorite bottle of wine while the kids choose their favorite beverage. Pass around family-style platters and picnic on the floor. When the movie’s over, have a movie review. Each family member can pick a favorite character, and discuss their favorite moments in the movie. Make it fun!

Indoor Scavenger Hunt

What child doesn’t like the idea of a treasure hunt? This version of hide-in-seek can be extra exhilarating when the entire family gets involved. Pick a prize everyone will desire –money, a box of animal crackers, or a stuffed animal. Try dressing up as pirates.

Make a treasure map and plant clues along the way.  For example: you can hide a clue in a sock drawer and create a rhyme – “Dirty socks will smell OK, once they’re clean and put away.” Everyone will race to check all the sock drawers to find the clue. Adjust the difficulty based on your child’s age. The more challenging you make it, the more stimulating the game will be for developing brains.

Create a Dance Video

Dancing is a great way to release pent-up energy and everyone will benefit from physical activity. Learn new dance moves together by watching an online video. Make it an epic dance party by choosing great music. Exercise and shake it out. Get silly. Have plenty of drinks to hydrate, and snacks. One you have your moves choreographed, capture it on your phone to keep the memory. Or video chat with Grandma to make her day! If you’re comfortable sharing, post it on social media or Tick Toc.
