Craving Salt

If you could describe the flavor of the typical American diet in one word, that word might be salty. About nine out of 10 people are consuming more sodium than recommended. Some of the foods that supply this sodium may surprise you. Number one on the list are bread and rolls. Rounding out the top 5 are: cold cuts and cured meats, pizza, poultry, and soup.

Most of the sodium in our diet comes from restaurant and processed foods. Only about 10 percent of our sodium comes from salt that we add in the kitchen or at the table.
