Ground Up Campaign

Started last year through collaboration between Birds Nest Foundation and United States of Food, the Ground Up Campaign is a bold, nationwide movement to place indoor academic gardens in public school classrooms.

The gardens will allow students to grow plants and vegetables in their classrooms while teachers educate students on the importance of natural, high-nutrient foods. Teachers are given a standing table garden, soil, seeds, and companion curriculum provided by Veggiecation. Grow To Learn NYC, the city’s garden initiative, provides long-term support and mini-grants.

100 Gardens, 100 Schools

Nutrition activist politicians, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer and St. Sen. Gustavo Rivera, as well as hundreds of educators attended the campaign’s launch event, held on October 13, 2011. So far, the Ground Up Campaign has given 100 gardens to 100 schools in all 5 boroughs of New York City.

“Thanks to groups like Avis Richards’ Birds Nest Foundation, we are educating more and more New York City children every day about the importance of nutritious eating and how and where to grow their own healthy food.” – New York City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn.
